Maaemo Lounge

Maaemo (NO)

2026

The refurbished lounge at Maaemo is designed around a series of quiet, intimate zones. The space is built on a foundation of tactile materials and furniture from Matre, Fogia, Wästberg, and Santa Cole, alongside vintage pieces and artisan works. At the center of the room custom serving tables and plinths anchor the space with a heavy, natural presence.

The interior was designed by Omhu focusing on honest materials and careful detailing. For the signature furniture Jenkins&Uhnger focused on balancing the feel of traditional handcraft with the precision of industrial production.

The custom plinths sit somewhere between furniture and architecture. Made from Norwegian solid oak and natural stone, these geometric blocks act as both material presence as well as pedestals of function. The stone used is Lundhs Emerald, a Larvikite quarried in Larvik Norway. Formed 300 million years ago, the stone has a dark depth that catches the light through blue feldspar crystals. The tops are honed smooth while the sides are left as "live edges," keeping the raw look of the rock. The wooden plinths are cut from single pieces of Norwegian oak. They are finely sanded but left in a natural state—preserving the grain, shifting colors, and cracks that come with using these dimensions in a living material.

The serving tables were designed to be a subtle and tactile background for the food and drink. They combine polished Lundhs Antique stone with solid Norwegian oak, showcasing fine joinery and adding detailing that feels good to the touch.

An added depth/perspective of these pieces comes from the local workshops that built them. The stone work was handled by Eide Stein, located just north of Molde near the Atlantic Road. The woodwork was completed by Kvass in Dovre—an area famous for its muskox and the mountain landscapes of Peer Gynt. Bringing these elements together in the lounge is a way of connecting the Maaemo experience back to the Norwegian heritage and landscape.
